Alphabet, Facebook, Apple among 10 tech giants who grew Bay Area workforce the most as hiring slowed last year

Data for this article was provided by the ON Partners 2019 Digital Jobs Index, reporting on the nation’s largest tech centers of Boston, New York City and the Bay Area.

Featured in Silicon Valley Business Journal written by Cromwell Schubarth — March 3, 2020 — The Bay Area’s tech employment grew by double digits again last year despite slowing down a bit from the pace of 2018, according to a new report.

The region added about 27,500 jobs, an 11.5 percent annual gain over the previous year, according to ON Partners’ “Digital Jobs Index.”

Last year’s growth in the region’s workforce outpaced the 26,780 new tech jobs added in 2018, but the rate was lower than the 12.7 percent increase posted then.

The Bay Area’s tech workforce growth was far larger than the other two “tech hubs” in the report, both of which showed a similar slowdown in pace. New York’s rate of growth fell to 10 percent from 13.4 percent as it added 8,190 jobs last year. Boston dropped to 6 percent from 9.2 percent as it added 4,100 jobs.

“While overall 2019 tech hiring was strong by almost any measure, we saw a noticeable slowdown that began over the summer and continued to the end of the year,” John Barrett of ON Partners said in the report. “Increasing fears due to the coronavirus are expected to dampen hiring in this year’s first quarter, which is historically the strongest period for new hiring.”

Four of the companies who hired the most tech workers in New York were also among the top 10 in the Bay Area: Amazon.com Inc., Alphabet Inc., Facebook Inc. and Salesforce.com Inc. Two others made the top 10 in the Big Apple but not in their home region: Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc.
